| Soil
conservation and watershed management and soil and water resources engineering
incorporate land surveying and mapping, and analysis of conservation practices.
Activities on the farm that enhance class use include watershed characteristics,
stream classification, conservation practices, terraces, riparian buffers,
grass waterways, underground outlets, grade control structures, stiff-grass
hedges, constructed wetlands, and research plots. Land surveying includes
topographic surveying and profile leveling to determine land slope and water
flow patterns. Survey data collected at the site are used in laboratory
exercises where students evaluate alternative conservation practices. Students
quantify crop residue and its impact on soil erosion in a residue management
lab session. |
