Class instruction class research

The Rogers Memorial Farm has several facilities and outdoor settings that make the "hands-on" teaching experience very effective.

The building for large machinery storage is used for teaching in class and demonstrations for extension personnel. The equipment and no-tillage conservation tillage practices are ideal to demonstrate planter and drill equipment setup and calibration procedures. The farm equipment set is used in several Mechanized Systems Management courses to discuss and demonstrate machinery selection, sizing and management.

hands-on research
Soil conservation and watershed management and soil and water resources engineering incorporate land surveying and mapping, and analysis of conservation practices. Activities on the farm that enhance class use include watershed characteristics, stream classification, conservation practices, terraces, riparian buffers, grass waterways, underground outlets, grade control structures, stiff-grass hedges, constructed wetlands, and research plots. Land surveying includes topographic surveying and profile leveling to determine land slope and water flow patterns. Survey data collected at the site are used in laboratory exercises where students evaluate alternative conservation practices. Students quantify crop residue and its impact on soil erosion in a residue management lab session.
